R. China, grounded in the channel with a pilot on board while crossing the Second Bar, Lasawei, at 2009 hours on Nov, 26, 1959. The vessel first touched the bottom on the port side at 2004 hours and, in manoeuvring away from that side of the channel, the west side, she grounded on the east side of the channel at 2009 hours and was held fast there. It is obvious that there was not sufficient depth of water in the Second Bar channel for my vessel to cross safety and I claim the estimated arrival draft as radioed to the agent to report to you was a close one.
